Chris Idema is a Rotterdam-based architect and maker.

Inspired by humor, the built environment and the randomness of everyday life, his work is based on a long practice of live sketching his surroundings through bold black lines and the interest in craft. Explorative with his technique, he recently began mesh-printing art prints created from experimenting with combinations of hand drawings, 3D modeling and digital illustration. Through this process, he introduces color into his work, which serves to emphasize the highly contrasting elements of his work

De Caai - Eindhoven

Since 1961, the 'Campina Dairy Facility' was located on what was – at the time – an ultra-modern factory site. After 55 years of operations, the site has been undergoing a transformation since 2021 into a new urban district where living, working, and recreation converge. The new residents and users of De Caai live consciously; sustainability and healthy living are integrated into every aspect. There will be a good balance between the vibrancy of city life on the one hand, and a tranquil, green outdoor area for relaxation on the other, where users come together in the belief that everything can and should be greener. - Mei architects and planners

At De Caai in Eindhoven stands Flow, a tower by BPD | Bouwfonds Gebiedsontwikkeling, designed by Mei architects and planners. A 6x4-meter artwork that I designed in 2021 on behalf of BPD is currently being installed.

Located in a prominent spot on the corner of Kanaaldijk Zuid and Jeroen Boschlaan, the wall tableau highlights the character and history of the site.

Following a thorough sampling process with Kolen and Huybregts Relou (VB Groep), we arrived at a variation of finishes and depths for the solid natural stone elements. These elements seamlessly connect the tower and low-rise buildings in terms of materiality and design language. A gift for both the residents and the location.
